Red Hawks Girls Soar at Regionals

Game Date
Oct 26, 2019

Coach Melinda Stressman and The Varsity Girls Cross Country Team traveled to Allendale High School on Saturday, October 30th to compete in the Region 1 (Division 1) Regional Championships.

The rain soaked course did not slow down the Lady Red Hawks. Cedar Springs secured a strong 7th place finish in the 17 team field. The Red Hawks finished ahead of Conference rival and a 2020 top ten State Finalist team in GR Ottawa Hills. This was the first time the Lady Hawks have defeated Ottawa Hills all season. Cedar Springs was paced by Sophomore Annalise Elliott (11th – 19:23) and Junior Larissa McGrath (13th – 19:31). Their efforts garnered the two All-Region honors and qualified them for the Division I State Championships at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, MI. on Saturday, November 6th. The strong performances also moved the two runners onto the All Time Top Ten list at Cedar Springs High School.

Senior Ally Ladd finished a stellar High School career placing 47th with a strong race running 21:03.  Ally has been a consistent runner for the Red Hawks and has garnered numerous accolades throughout her 4 year career including a two time All-Conference Selection. Ally was followed by Junior Molly Bentley (22:08) who has been a staple in the top five on the Varsity squad over the last couple of years. Finishing in the 5th position for the Red Hawks and running 22:20 was Senior Isabel VanDusen who also finishes a remarkable career in a Red Hawk uniform. Isabel has been a Varsity runner all four years and is an extremely consistent runner that the team can always count on.  Sophomore Hannah Reed has steadily improved all season long and finished next for Cedar Springs in 76th place running 23:01. Rounding out the Varsity squad was Senior Madison Golliver in 88th place (23:48). Madison ran Varsity all year after dedicating herself to the sport in the off season and her hard work and commitment has correlated to huge improvements on the Cross-Country course.

While looking forward and trying to replace three Senior leaders is never an easy task, the future does look bright for the Red Hawks as evidenced by the solid performances turned in from four underclassmen in the Post Regional Open Meet. The Junior Varsity team was led by a strong 22:46 from Sophomore Kaitlynn Brown who was followed closely by another Sophomore, Addyson Brown (23:09). Freshman Emily Hoort (23:44) and Addison Wood (24:08) continue to show steady improvement and great potential in the upcoming years.
